Long Afternoons

Capo on the first fret for this one.

Fingerpicking pattern is played with an alternating thumb which playes the 5th and 3rd string on the A(maj7), and the 6th and 3rd string on the E chords. E chords are played with a sus2 note on the first string, and the A chord is played with a hammer-on sus2 note on the second string. If there's a request, I'll write out the full tab.

Amaj7:    E:

4              0 (2/4/5)
5              5
6              4
x               x
0              x
x               0

Intro: Amaj7 - E - Amaj7

(Amaj7) Once I knew a (E) woman, she loved only (Amaj7) me
She knew how to (E) touch and how to (A) turn to me
She knew how to kiss and she (E) knew how to (Amaj7) whisper
No need to (E) explain how I feel about (Amaj7) her

Her hair it was brown, soft brown in the sun
I could blow it away when it came down undone
So perfumed and clean like the snow on a flower
No need to explain how I feel about her

Her ribbons and lace, we shared in her room
I remember them well and the long afternoons
Her words falling softly like a warm summer shower
No need to explain how I feel about her

Soon the hay-fields will ripen, soon the berry will show
Then they'll fade into autumn to lay under the snow
Some years among many leave much more to remember
No need to explain how I feel about her

  1. Thanks very much for posting this! I believe that the recorded version is without a capo. I'm a little confused about your notation on the high E string of the E chord (2/4/5). Can you explain? Also, what is the A chord fingering you're using? Thank you.

    1. Thanks for the comment. I just listened again, and I'm pretty sure the version on YouTube is with a capo on the first fret (sounding key: F major). For the A chord I use a simple 02220x fingering, with a hammer-on on the B-string. I'm pretty sure Paul Siebel does the same. During the E chord, there is a delicate little melody that is played on the high e-string. It is not exactly the same each time around; it's easiest to listen and use these positions (open, 2nd/4th/5th) to replicate what he is playing. Hope this helps!

~Jim
